    Established in 1973‚ ELEC monitors the campaign financing of all elections in the State. Whether the election is for Governor or Mayor‚ member of the Legislature or a City Council‚ candidates and campaign organizations are required to file with the Commission contribution and expenditure reports.

December 10‚ 1997 link The Commission announced that‚ as of the 20-day post election reports‚ campaign spending for the 1997 general election increased by 40 percent over the amount spent in 1993‚ the last year when both houses of the Legislature‚ as well as the Governor‚ were up for election.

November 25‚ 1997 link The Commission announced White Paper No. 12‚ Repartyization: The Rebirth of County Organizations.  The study notes that in 1986‚ the 42 county party committees were raising just $2 million and spending $2.3 million.  By 1996‚ these same organizations raised $9.4 million and spent $8.4 million.

November 19‚ 1997 link The Commission is proposing a new rule to address the use of campaign funds for payment of legal fees and expenses which arise directly from and are related to an election campaign for public office or from holding such elected office.
